Trauma is a response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event which overwhelms an individual to the point they cannot live their regular life anymore. This can be something recent or in the past.
Trauma can be seen as a psychological wound. Living with trauma can feel like living with a wound that never heals. This can cause a lot of pain and suffering.
Trauma can arise from events which may involved actual or perceived:
Traffic accident
Sudden death of a loved one
Serious illness
Witnessing a traumatic event
Violence
Trauma can cause:
Intense feelings of helplessness
Diminished sense of self (i.e. who am I? what did I do to deserve this?)
Feeling numb or having intense and quickly changing emotions
Anxiety/Depression
Flashbacks (sudden vivid memories of the trauma - involving multiple senses i.e. remember images, sounds, smells or tastes)
Excessive fear - constantly feeling like there is danger/threat to your safety
Trauma can cause Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which is a very serious disorder where symptoms of trauma persist beyond 6 months.
Everyone experiences difficult moments in life. Sometimes it can lead to symptoms of trauma but often, these symptoms will fade over time.
In PTSD the symptoms of trauma become worse or stay the same for a long time, preventing you from living your regular life.

Phobias are a specific type of anxiety in which one specific thing (i.e. a spider, heights or confined spaces) causes such extreme fear disrupting daily life.
For example, if someone has a spider phobia, they might not be able to be in the same room with a spider. They might panic, freeze or even pass out if they see a spider.
If someone have a fear of open spaces, they might not be able to leave their house at all.
Fortunately, phobias are very treatable. Exposure therapy is highly effective at curing phobias.
